Sick_Nerd, a streamer on Twitch, a live streaming video platform received a total donation of 20 Bitcoins (BTC) some days ago. The gift came anonymously while he was gaming away on his computer. The verified streamer who has been on Twitch for five years and has over 109,000 followers made this known on Twitter on January 11.
Streamer Receives Donation While Gaming
Based on reports, Sick_Nerd was playing the game “Old School RuneScape”, a fantasy multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). This is a game that is said to be popular among streaming platforms. Here, a streamer can play and record a game, while chatting live with his/her viewers.
In the case of the Sick_Nerd, after his first donation of 4 BTC (about $14,600) was received, another came in amounting to 11 BTC ($40,000). By the day’s end, the streamer had amounted up to 20 BTC ( about $73,000) from a viewer known as Lightpuma. Sick_Nerd, however, appreciated the kind gesture of his benefactor.
In his own words:
Thank you to my mysteriously benefactor whoever you are, genuinely a life changing amount of money that I or nobody deserves but look what happened. Crazy
Streamlabs and Coinbase Makes Donating Possible in Twitch
The cryptocurrency donation on Twitch began in June 2018 and it is made possible with the use of Streamlabs, a streaming software. The platform partnered with Coinbase, a virtual currency exchange to aid in the processing of payments. In this case, a wide range of digital assets available on the Californian-based exchange can be donated by viewers to streamers.
Although the amount sent to SickNerd is a big deal, reports say it is a needle in a haystack because others have received more earnings. An instance is the case of Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, an American Twitch streamer who is believed to have earned about $10 million in 2018. Ninja has the most views on Twitch and the user’s popularity has been attributed to popular celebrities like Drake having been his viewer.
Cryptocurrency Enthusiasts Show Excitement on Reddit
Crypto enthusiasts, on the other hand, have taken to Reddit to make comments on the recent transaction. A user said they are happy that the payment was made in Bitcoin, which takes away transaction issues such as money being resent to the source as is sometimes the case with Paypal. Another user remarked that: “Anonymously donating Bitcoins to yourself is a clever way to get out of paying capital gains tax”.
