Tommy Robinson Banned From Paypal Without Explanation

Tommy Robinson, the right-wing extremist UK commentator, is being banned from Paypal. This means that he won’t be able to receive payments or donations from their contributors. Also, his funds will be untouchable by six months. Paypal has not made a statement about this and declined to talk about a specific client.

Paypal Bans Tommy Robinson

Tommy Robinson, one of the most notorious right-wing activists in the UK, announced today that Paypal, one of the most known payment services has banned him from using their platform. He also declared that they had not made any statement to justify this course of action.

Tommy is one of the most active right-wing anti-Islam activists in the UK. He was in jail last year by broadcasting live the arrival of Muslim criminals to the court for a trial. He was sentenced to serve 18 months but he appealed and the court accepted his appeal. However, Tommy has been also a very vocal Islam detractor, founding the English Defence League, a right-wing institution with the objective of destroying Islam in the UK.
Some reports indicate this could be the reason of the ban of Tommy Robinson’s Paypal account.

Declarations From Both Sides

Tommy Robinson quickly declared that:

“They just don’t like my opinion and want to silence me.The government and establishment can see I have public support, they can see I have the ability to fight back.”

tommy referred to the number of dollars that he had been getting as donations to fight his court battles.
Paypal, on the other hand, declined to comment nothin specifically about the case. They only made clear that Tommy would not be able to use their service never again. They did make a general declaration, stating that:

“Striking the necessary balance between upholding free expression and open dialogue and protecting principles of tolerance, diversity and respect for all people is a challenge that many companies are grappling with today.”

The Need For Censorship Resistant Money

All of these bans from Paypal just make more important the existence of permissionless, censorship-free money. In fact, this is one of the best cases where using cryptocurrencies does not feel as an afterthought, but a valid case of use. Third parties should not have the power to censure transactions or take money from the people.

Cryptocurrencies present just that to the censorship affected community that is still facing issues. Sidestepping banks and payment gateways, cryptos are giving people funds directly without third parties in the mix.
