Sierra Leone Gov't: No Blockchain Used In Elections

The Sierra Leone government has officially denied that Blockchain was used in tallying election results by the National Electoral Commission (NEC). This was after a plethora of news surfaced and made rounds all over the internet reporting that the Sierra Leone presidential elections will be the first Blockchain-based election in the world to be supported by voting tech company, Agora.
The announcement was made via tweet in the twitter account of Sierra Leone’s NEC. It read: “The National Electoral Commission uses an in-house database to tally election results. This database was originally developed for the elections held in 2012. It was then expanded and updated, prior to the 2018 elections. The database was developed in C++ and runs on MS SQL- neither of which are open source applications. And it does not use Blockchain in any way.”
Agora has also released an official statement regarding the matter on March 19th, considering they were under fire for “intentionally misleading the public about their role in the election”. Part of the statement was their explanation of the legitimacy of their role in their elections as international observer. It underlined their previous statement that they never claimed to be counting official election results in their trial Blockchain election test. They also clarified that Agora was accredited by the NEC to cover 280 polling stations in the West District of Sierra Leone, and that a “partial deployment of their technology was used in the election.”
The statement from the voting tech company ended with an invitation to work with SLOEDP moving forward.
