Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany Considers Blockchain Technology to Check Its Products

Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies, has filed for a US patent for it to use blockchain technology.
This blockchain technology will be used to check their products, and to widen their program against product counterfeitng as reported in Coindesk.
The said patent was published last week, but the application was submitted last December 2016. It layouts the process on how blockchain can be utilized to store information about a physical object and track its movement from the point of its origin to the point of consumption or end users (these could be those who buy or receive the products) . This distributed network could help in verifying the authenticity of a product.
Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany has already an existing system in place that checks their products to prevent counterfeiting. But the proposed patent on blockchain technology seems to broaden their product monitoring efforts.
Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany noted when it filed for the said technology that it “enables a secure, reliable storage of the reading results with very high data integrity, such that it is essentially impossible to manipulate or erase or otherwise taper [sic] with or lose such data, e.g. due to unintended or deliberate deletion or due to data corruption.”
The pharmaceutical company explained, “Furthermore, the stored information can be accessed wherever access to the blockchain is available. This allows for a safe and distributed storage and access to the stored reading results, e.g. for integrity verification purposes such as checking whether a supplier of a product being marked with a composite security marking, as described herein, was in fact the originator of the product, or not.”
Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany has already pursued various technology initiatives. We have yet to see on whether it will indeed implement blockchain in their system.

The said group is a huge association of businesses who are exploring how Ethereum blockchain might be able to help various industries.
