Today GMO, the Japanese enterprise conglomerate, has announced that they will introduce cryptocurrency reward support for a game called “Whimsical War”, where gamers will be rewarded with cryptocurrency depending on certain actions or their standings in the global player leaderboard, in the same trend that a service like XBOX Achievements, but with real crypto instead of nice messages. They announced this via a Press Release published in their own webpage.
GMO Intenet Group is not strange to cryptocurrencies: they are one of the biggest cryptocurrency related businesses in all Japan. They have an enormous mining division and even have their own development division, that is planning to launch a revolutionary miner powered with new and more efficient chips. Whimsical War is a real-time strategy game, with cute animal-like characters that fight battles that last three minutes long each. It is heavily based on positioning and strategy because characters move by themselves on the battlefield, attacking enemies upon encounter.
The technology that will make this possible is called CryptoChips, and it will be available to be used with several games starting next August. CryptoChips will act as a middle layer between the game program and the cryptocurrency rewards, letting programmers choose how and when the players will be rewarded. The tech will start supporting only bitcoin first, but support for other cryptocurrencies will be added later.
Rewarding gamers with cryptocurrency is not new, there have been some attempts at doing this before: Montecrypto, a computer game distributed through Steam, promised that the first player to solve the puzzle in the game would gain a bitcoin. But this is the first time that it is done within a platform and to distribute cryptocurrencies to a more numerous amount of users.
Whimsical war is already available to download for free with in-app purchases on Android and IOS platforms.
