Facebook Flops Again, Blockchain Based Social Networks Alternatives Rise

Blockchain technology is now enjoying a spring of its own, previously being relegated as the engine for cryptocurrencies, but the truth is that it can do so much more than just that. Now that Facebook has flopped yet again by turning personal information to third parties, maybe it could be time for exploring new more secure decentralized social networks to support. Decentralized social platforms could be a good start to put the power of people’s own information back in their hands, as opposed to centralized data being managed and farmed by the info overlords at Facebook.
Since the Cambridge Analitica incident, when Facebook admitted that he had given unlimited access to out personal info through a third party app, people’s confidence in Facebook has continuously waned. And while supposedly some measures were taken to avoid this happening again, it turns out that it has happened all over again and now it could be worse. More than 30 million people were affected by a hack that reveals important information about the data and the usage that all of these users had in the last months.
According to Guy Rosen, Vice-president of product management, the info taken included:
“username, gender, locale/language, relationship status, religion, hometown, self-reported current city, birthdate, device types used to access Facebook, education, work, the last 10 places they checked into or were tagged in, website, people or Pages they follow, and the 15 most recent searches.”
So hackers have access to this detailed info about your life and also about your daily routines, and they can use it to hurt you. If you are careless they could even use social engineering to find out other things about you apart from the things that they already know.
That is why social decentralized counterparts for security conscient people are so necessary for this day and age. And luckily according to, they are already available, even if highly unknown for most of us.
While there is no blockchain counterpart to Facebook (no cryptocurrency geekboy would openly leave so much more open to others to see), there is a Twitter clone with cryptocurrency feel that is being actively supported: Blockpress. Blockpress presents itself as a Twitter substitute that uses the BCH blockchain to store its messages and personal information. It presents the possibility of searching people in their network and also has a general view to see how it is doing with public users in the network; all of this without turning your personal network to anyone on the net and having your info secured in the blockchain.
So, incipient substitutes are already happening, so Twitter and Facebook must be vigilant about how they face possible attackers and also about how they will preserve their users using the old centralized and vulnerable architecture to manage their user’s info. The social flippening could be happening in this next decade.
