Dark Web Drug Dealer Identified By His Bitcoin Transaction History

Yesterday, Gal Vallerius, a French citizen, was convicted this week by selling drugs in an online marketplace called dream market, hosted on the dark web. The conviction was possible because of the bitcoin transactions made from that site to bitcoin wallets registered to his name, according to an article from Bleeping Computer.
Gal Valerius, the French citizen that pleaded guilty was detained last September when he went to the United States to participate in the World Beard and Moustache Championship. But he had bad luck, because the American authorities had already linked their identity with the nickname of a multiple drug vendor called OxyMonster. OxyMonster was a known vendor on the dark web, having multiple accounts in different markets, where he sold Ritalin and cocaine, among other illegal drugs.
The Feds managed to find the real identity of the suspect because unlike other vendors who used a service of anonymization in the darknet market, he redirected his payment to wallets that were associated with an account at his name on LocalBitcoins, a popular peer to peer bitcoin market.
Then when the DEA agents made a style comparison from excerpts taken from his seized laptop, they encountered a striking resemblance between the ways in that both OxyMonster and Gal Galerius wrote. Gal Galerius pleaded guilty of possession and distribution of controlled substances, and also from money laundering charges last week to avoid a life jail sentence, but he could be facing up to 20 years for his wrongdoings.
In most criminal cases, cryptocurrencies are being referred to as the facilitating factor of the felony, making possible for criminals to get away without guilt; but this time, the DEA managed to show that cryptocurrencies are not anonymous per se; every transaction gets recorded and stays in the blockchain forever, though obviously, the suspect was sloppy in his execution.
