A Chinese university recently filed a patent for the use of the blockchain technology to manage web domain name. This would be used to address the technical problem noted by the varsity in the present system.
Peking University Web Domain Patent For Web Domain Name Management
Shenzhen Graduate School at Peking University has filed a patent as revealed in a patent published by the United States patent and trademark office. This patent seeks the use of “consortium blockchain” to improve security and efficiency in managing top-level domains (TLDs).
The Shenzhen graduate school team noted that the present system is based on distributed systems, but still experiences some technical issues.
As further noted in the filing there is an uneven distribution of root name servers. It was stated that the internet users in Asia enjoy a significantly slower domain name resolution speed than users to North America. When a root name server in Asia malfunctions, over 20 million internet users requests for domain name resolution will be affected. This was noted in the filing that it results in significantly lower reliability in Asian domain name resolution.
How the Blockchain technology will transform domain name management
Notably, the blockchain invention aids sharing of data in a public and immutable way. This makes data and information available for trusted agencies and individuals on blockchain technology and aid building a corresponding seed file database to store mapping relations between the top level and subdomain name system.
This feature would enable all-regions as noted in the filing, to be able to set up domain name servers according to their real-world needs. This would ensure the necessary speed of internet access without getting limited by other institutions.
Further, the newly filed system will see the division of the domain name system into two layers, and each would be corresponding to a subdomain name system it goes on. Also, the holder of the TLD determines how the subdomain system is designed. This is noted in the filing that the subdomain name system can be designed as either a centralized system or decentralized system according to the wishes of the institutions.
A further advantage of the newly filed system is the impossibility of change or influence of the feature of the system of distributed nodes, by a consortium or small group, though the 51% tendency of attack on proof-of-work is still a possibility.
The team stated that it is compatible with the existing internet, but it has more security and reliability with a more concise and efficient consensus mechanism.
