BTC City Mall in Slovenia, Europe to Test Cryptocurrency Payment

The popularity of cryptocurrency is continuously increasing. A lot of Eastern European countries are among those who are open to the idea of cryptocurrency. Now, a shopping mall in Slovenia in Eastern Europe is starting out to test the performance and feasibility of cryptocurrency as a means of payment in the retail industry according to an article published in Coindesk.
BTC (or Blagovno Transportni Center) City Ljubljana, one of the biggest malls in Slovenia will let 150 people use cryptocurrency when they purchase from the 24 stores in the said mall. This is to test if people will be open or interested to make payments in the mall stores using digital currencies. If proven to be successful, this project will be implemented in all of the stores (which is more than 500 stores) in the shopping complex.
This year, BTC City in collaboration with Eligma, a Fintech start-up company created Elipay. Elipay is a mobile payment application system that allows the sending and receiving of payment. This is now being utilized in various stores inside BTC City mall.
As posted on BTC City’s website, Elipay has already been set up in various stores in the city such as Al Capone, Atlantis Water Park, Babadu, Big Bang, Bijoux modni dodatki, Minicity, Kibuba, Sneakers, and Vodno mesto San Martino. There are a number of Elipay ATMs within the area. This move will make transactions with Elipay more convenient for its users in the area.
This project aims to make BTC City a “Bitcoin City”, a shopping mall that utilizes the latest technologies such as cryptocurrencies, blockchain, and AI. Also, it aims to make the transactions easier and more efficient for its customers. Aside from these, BTC City wants to be a well-known crypto hub not only in Slovenia but also in all of Europe.
According to an article posted at Bitcoin.com, Prime Mister Miro Cerar visited BTC City for the morning meeting. The Slovenian State Secretary bought a coffee for the Prime Minister using cryptocurrency through the Elipay payment system. This is indeed a great start to test the cryptocurrency payment in BTC City.
This program is an excellent avenue to introduce the use of cryptocurrency, not only in malls or retail stores but in various industries as well. The vision may be, but it doesn’t seem impossible to achieve.
It is understandable that massive investment is needed in order to make all these goals happen. However, with the support of the government and various private companies, the goal to shift into crypto nation would not be that difficult.
The initiative and support of Slovenia are good indications that cryptocurrency is being viewed in a favourable light, that it could help in boosting the country’s economy. It would surely take time before cryptocurrency will be fully embraced as a new means in doing transactions not only in Slovenia, but also in other countries.
It is notable that several Scandinavian and Baltic countries such as Estonia are also moving towards the use of cryptocurrency. Like Slovania, they also acknowledge the possible benefit of using cryptocurrency to their economy.
