Blockchain Implemented In Sierra Leone's Presidential Election

Today, it was announced that the latest presidential election of Sierra Leone was run by a blockchain based system. This was done without even disclosing the fact to the electorate that assisted to the ballot vote, according to this source.
The company responsible for the backend system, Agora, stated that they used a “permissioned blockchain”, such as the one used by Ripple to have an accurate insight to the ballot and its results. The company stated also that their system implementation was accompanied by thousands of witnesses due to the importance of the election at hand.
Of course, the system has its own vulnerabilities, as every other system used by people. The results must be first counted manually, with every votation ballot then entered into the system. “Voters complete their votes on paper ballots and then our team with impartial observers register them on the blockchain”, stated one of the Agora chairs.
This story points an important application of blockchain in voting events; and how it can be used to further enhance transparency in these kinds of process. It is expected that due to the recent stories of possible election manipulation, blockchain systems will be more and more used in the near future.
