Australian Bitcoin Sports Betting Site Under Investigation

Justbet, a Bitcoin-based sports betting website is currently being subjected to an investigation according to Australian authorities. The website had been presenting itself as Australian by recording its domain in an Australian Island territory, but it’s IP address reveals otherwise. After being traced, the IP address was shown to be coming from Costa Rica.
The website is reportedly registered by the Christmas Island Domain Administration (CIDA), a non-profit company which offers internet services to Christmas Island citizens- an Australian external territory.  Because it uses a ‘.cx’ address, Justbet gives the impression that it is under Australian regulation yet it has been registered by a Panamanian, and the IP address trace shows the company is established in San Jose, Costa Rica. After this revelations had been discovered by Tasmanian minister, Andrew Wilkie, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) publicized that they have launched an investigation regarding the company and its potential breaches of Australia’s Interactive Gambling Act.
According to an ACMA spokesperson, the Interactive Gambling Act bans “unlicensed regulated interactive gambling services, such as online wagering services provided without a license issued by an Australian State or Territory” from being offered in Australia. The spokesperson added that “The ACMA has published a register of interactive wagering services that are not included on this register are likely to be provided to Australian clients illegally.”
Mr. Wilkie has said earlier this week that “The site should be shut down immediately, and the Christmas Island Domain Administration should act straight away to remedy the situation.”
